College entrants must have graduated with four (4) years of psychology at a University acceptable to the NSW Psychologists Registration Board. New candidates must attend a selection and assessment session. The object is twofold: 1. To identify suitable candidates by the use of the selection techniques of organisational psychology. 2. To assess the developmental needs of each candidate. Intake is at a date agreeable to the College. Once accepted, interns are closely supervised so that there is little likelihood of failure in not completing the course. Since the nature of employment may force an intern to disrupt practicum work for a short period, the practicums are in modules which allow some flexibility. The College curriculum is based on a detailed analysis of the various competencies required by psychologists in the workplace. The College consequently offers more skills than the minimum required by the NSW Psychologists Registration Board. This gives College graduates a competitive advantage. Emphasis is on putting skills into action. Interns are required to make a variety of presentations, some of which may be recorded on video or audio tape. Written reports on all skills achieved are also a requirement. Any exercise that is not passed must be repeated until the intern becomes competent. Interns are required to have or develop computer literacy at a level sufficient to use an advanced word processor such as Microsoft Word, and to be able to carry out statistical procedures on Microsoft Excel or an equivalent spreadsheet. People who are uncomfortable with computers or statistical procedures should identify themselves early so that they can be advised about remediation. Upon paying College fees, interns are provided with a comprehensive Supervision Logbook in which supervisory experiences are recorded for later submission to the Psychologists Registration Board. All instruction and supervision (mentoring) is carried out by a staff of experienced psychologists currently active in the field. Practicums are held in the evening usually between 5:45 and 8:00pm on alternate Thursdays. A few workshops are held on Wednesdays. Two hours of face-to-face supervision is scheduled for in a regular timeslot each fortnight and is set by an intern's supervisor. Fortnightly supervision (mentoring) may be arranged for 5:00-7.00pm on a weekday usually Monday or Tuesday night. |
